For the past several months, there have been debates about who should win the 2024 Election. For us, this one will be especially important, as “the winning candidate will be president when all of us graduate!” which Japanese Teacher Kyle Wachi (E302) cannot stress enough.
This is a high school campus, so understandably, a grand majority of our students are not able to vote in the official election, with the only exceptions being our 18-year-old seniors & our staff. However, this setback isn’t able to stop us from making predictions on the results of this election! Now that all the information has been provided, we can take everything we know about these two candidates and attempt to predict a victor for the 2024 Election!
It does seem like the consensus on the election is split down by the half, though. Our two major candidates this year are our 45th President Donald J. Trump, and 49th Vice President who served under Joe Biden, Kamala D. Harris. As of 7:00 pm on November 5th, voting has been closed. However, the result of the election at the time had not been determined, as ballots were still being counted. However, on November 6th, at 6:47 am, Trump was announced to have barely won the election, with 51% of the votes. Meanwhile Harris appears to have 47.5% of the votes. The remaining 0.8% of votes went to Jill Stein & Robert Kennedy, both of which hold less than a million votes in total.
For the past few months, there has been much uncertainty surrounding our political future, as significant changes are said to be made. For example, Harris’ Energy policy would take Joe Biden’s energy policy and build upon it, promoting clean energy. Harris would also address the climate change issue, and support a plan to ensure better public health, and a better environment. Trump’s Energy policy would take us back to his first term, mainly focusing on deregulation, domestic production methods, and lessening the use of fossil fuels or other foreign sources of energy. It is important to note here that the while the plans have similar goals, execution will be one of the biggest factors here in determining whether the policies will actually make a difference or not. There are also numerous other topics to consider such as Tax Policies, Us-Canada Cross-Border issues, Financial Service Policies, etc. that should be taken into account.
Ballots were mailed to registered voters a few weeks prior, with the Honolulu ballot boxes being found at numerous spots, such as Waipahu District Park, Hauula Civic Center, Hawaii Kai Park and Ride, Kailua District Park, and Waianae District Park, just to name a few. The Hawaii Polls were closed at 7:00 pm on November 5th, 2024.
With voting now over, Trump will serve his second term as United States President, up until the next election in the year 2028. As said before, the votes were incredibly close, but Trump managed to get the upper-hand. This victory is very much remarkable, seeing as when he first tried for a second term, he lost to Biden. And with that, election season is over. Trump’s inauguration will be on Monday, January 20th, 2025, when he will then take office again.
