This has been a debate for a long time. AI has evolved and is scarily realistic. But it has made some waves of mixed emotions between teachers and the DOE as a whole. While it’s not common that students use AI for classes, the idea of it has already worried teachers that students will use it to cheat on tests and essays. Yet some teachers will turn around and use it to grade them.
Some teachers use AI to grade their students’ work. Considering AI is not always accurate, how will teachers take that into consideration when “grading” with chat gpt. Many teachers don’t take the time to sit and grade anymore, why? Because teachers have access to technology that grades students’ work for them. But is it fair to the students who put the work into it, to be graded by AI? If the student meets the criteria and excels in everything does not give the teacher the right to accuse the student of cheating with AI. Ironically,if you use AI to grade, you’re doing more work with AI than students.
If students are supposed to not use AI then why should teachers use it? As a society we’ve lost the meaning of “lead by example”, which is exactly what we need right now. With technology advancing and being hard to figure out then we need to use it for the right reasons. Now if it is used for the wrong reason and the student(s) cheat then teachers can make some case that students are cheating.
Less than 90% of students only use AI or something similar to study (based on Kaiser high school polls).. Yet 1 in 3 teachers use it to grade based on the AI’s idea of passing. Considering that AI cannot accurately assess student work with rubrics, then it will likely not give you an accurate score for the student(s). As someone who has used it for inspiration, it doesn’t affect the outcome of an essay or a test. It’s there to ASSIST us, not WORK for us. So I ask again, is it right to allow teachers to grade with AI but not let students use it for any reason?
Teachers use it to prepare for class. It’s not only grading that teachers use AI for, it’s also preparing class work and assignments. If it’s hard to find a sub or a teacher is sick then this is a little more reasonable to use AI because then it can be helpful to pick up where you left off when a teacher returns to class. Although the assignments could be questioned because as a teacher you are not making the questions for your students. It’s understandable if it’s inspiration or cleaning up details on a certain topic but using the same questions with no changes is not using AI or grammarly correctly. AI can be used for the purpose of researching ideas and skills. However, teachers should alter the lesson to better fit the students’ needs.
If teachers do not take the time to read the tests/essays, then they will not understand a students’ ’s writing. Teachers should read to understand the student as a person and style of writing. If students don’ t have a “foundation” to build on, how are students supposed to do the task at hand? Even if students used it for inspiration, they are not cheating because they are not using AI to create their work word for word. To use AI effectively, students must use their brain to think about what can be put in the story and not rely on AI for everything but the same goes for teachers.
