On October 1, 2025, the United States’ government shut down as a result of Republicans and Democrats in Congress having an inability to reach a decision over the government’s funding and budget. A government shutdown consists of the majority of non-essential federal employees being temporarily laid off, and essential federal employees being forced to work without pay, and causing delays to social welfare programs such as food stamps. This government shutdown affects individuals across America—with over 600,000 federal workers furloughed and over 42 million individuals without SNAP benefits. These furloughed federal workers include air traffic controllers, military personnel, and law enforcement officers.

The government shutdown was put into effect after weeks of debate in Congress. September 30th marked the final deadline for Congress lawmakers to set the federal budget for the upcoming fiscal year. However, they failed to reach an agreement in the end, and the government shutdown as an effect. The shutdown occurred due to the Democrats and Republicans within Congress having an inability to come to a conclusion on the government’s spending priorities. In particular, there was major disagreement over funding healthcare for undocumented immigrants and domestic programs.
As of now, the 2025 government shutdown is the longest continuous shutdown in U.S. history, surpassing the previous record of the longest shutdown which lasted a total of 35 days under the Trump Administration. Currently, the 2025 shutdown has caused various negative effects amongst United States’ citizens. With over 600,000 federal employees furloughed—including air traffic controllers, Environmental Protection Agency workers, and Department of Education staff—the government has come to a near standstill. The majority of these furloughed workers have been left without a paycheck for several weeks, leaving their families to rely on savings or temporary assistance. This has caused a multitude of ripple effects ranging from risks to national security, decreases in government efficiency, and strains to local economies.
The government shutdown not only affects federal workers, but also ordinary American citizens. This shutdown has caused the suspension of social programs including the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. The SNAP program provides assistance to low-income families by supplementing the costs of nutritional food. SNAP is important as it makes purchasing groceries more affordable and accessible to individuals that are less fortunate. Without SNAP, many families who depend on the program’s benefits aren’t able to afford the groceries they need and as a result, go without food. However, this government shutdown has also led to a rise in community support for victims, as food banks and local organizations work to provide free food and necessities to those affected by the shutdown.

The 2025 government shutdown occurred as a result of a budget dispute between Democrats and Republicans within Congress. This has significantly impacted the lives of American citizens, more specifically federal workers and millions that rely on social programs such as SNAP. While many communities have stepped up to provide support, the shutdown highlights the government’s power and important role to the American people.
