As news breaks of the new Divergent book,”The Sixth Faction” the Divergent series has gradually become popular on Booktok again. Booktok is a community on TikTok where readers review books and share recommended books. The Divergent series follows Tris Prior and a dystopian world, where there are factions and once everyone turns 16 they must choose a faction to stay with for the rest of their lives. The factions contain Abnegation (selfless),Amity (peaceful),Candor(honest),Dauntless(brave) and Erudite(intelligent). Tris has chosen Abnegation, A during the ceremony when she turns 16 she switches to Dauntless. Due to this happening she is treated differently because people underestimate her and political aspects. The series contains three books and a novella of Four’s perspective. Four is Tris’s love interest and her mentor for training in Dauntless. It is later revealed that Four himself was a transfer as well from Abnegation.
The book(s) is very similar to other dystopian novels, such as Hunger Games, and Maze Runner. In the book, it follows a corrupt government that trains people to fit within the given factions. People are not allowed to think for themselves and have roles to fulfill with their given traits and if there is anything out of the ordinary then they go factionless or they get killed. Before the ceremony every 16 year old has to take a test that determines the best placement for them. Tris gets 3 out of the 5 factions making her divergent and a threat to the society rules and placement, as she gets picked for Erudite, Abnegation and Dauntless. On the day of the ceremony after her brother (Caleb) leaves Abnegation for Erudite, Tris feels like she has to stay to make her family proud. However, she chooses to leave and faces near death experiences and makes friends along the way.
After the ceremony the initiation begins. Initiation is different for each faction but in the eyes of Dauntless it is about how well you can handle yourself and be brave till the end. The other factions are a bit unknown of how they train new arrivals. In the books it’s indicated that Erudite brainwashes people to believe the same thing and act the same way. In the second book “Insurgent”, Tris and others find their way to Amity and slowly adjust to the new setting. The system is still corrupt, but after the rebellion and everything that happened it obviously got better but political aspects still arise through the center of the city/world. With the leader of Dauntless (Eric) who has believed in the factions since he was born takes control and starts hunting them down.
The new book will likely follow Tris choosing another factionVeronica Roth (the author) has said during the panel that “It will not be an alternate universe but Tris will choose a new path. It is a duo book, with the first released on October 6th 2026”. Her comments have left fans with little information on the upcoming book.
