The Rise of Flag Football
Flag Football is an up and coming sport. In just this past year, flag football has seen major growth across the United States, with more states and schools adding it in as an official sport. Organizations like the NFL have helped expand its popularity by promoting youth programs and supporting flag football training. As a result, participation and recognition of the sport have increased, making it one of the fastest growing sports.
Kaiser High’s Program
In just its second season, Kaiser High School’s flag football team is showing how rapidly the sport is growing. What started as something new last year, has turned into a competitive and exciting part of the athletic program. One of the biggest changes this season is the addition of two teams—Varsity 1 and Varsity 2. The creation of these two teams has allowed players to get more involved and help build a stronger program overall.

Leading Varsity 1 is coach Kasey Fukunaga, while Vars 2 is led by Coach Barry Money. From the start, both coaches focused on building strong team energy surrounded by effort, discipline, and teamwork. Expanding into 2 teams has allowed more athletes to participate, while also raising the competition this season. Whether it’s working on plays, improving speed and agility, or learning how to communicate better on the field, the players have shown immense growth from last season. Last season, both coaches and players were navigating their way through the rules and techniques of the game. Kaiser’s flag football team made the 3rd seed in playoffs, and lost to Leilehua who progressed to runner up for HHSAA girls flag football state championship.
Both teams compete in the D1 East OIA division, bringing a higher level of competition. Varsity 1 has taken a leadership role with more experienced players. At the same time Varsity 2 has become an important part of the program, giving newer players the chance to gain experience and develop their skills in real game situations. Having 2 teams not only made the program stronger but created a sense of community within the players and coaches.
Challenges and Criticism

Although flag football is on the rise for success, girls flag football is not always accepted by everyone. Some people question the legitimacy of the sport, or compare it to traditional boys tackle football, not understanding the skill, strategy, and athleticism it requires. However, as participation continues to grow, the sport is gaining support from organizations like the NFL and more.
