Whilst it’s no doubt that the custodians of Kaiser High School are working their hardest to keep the campus clean and beautiful for all to enjoy, there’s also no doubt that the job isn’t easy. Oftentimes, there’s so much happening at once that it’s near impossible for the custodians to keep up at all times. Thankfully, though, they’re not the only ones working to help our campus remain as pristine as it can be. On Wednesday, December 10th, 2025, a group of club officers joined together for an afterschool event which consisted of removing trash off the ground, mostly consisting of small pieces of plastic. The ICC Clean Up Day was announced as a mandatory event for club officers. Clubs were encouraged to try and bring as many of their officers as possible.
The event started after school as officers made their way to H102 to sign themselves in, providing the club they’re representing, their name, and position. Everyone was split into various groups depending on what club they were in, each of these groups working on separate parts of campus. Every group had one trash bag which they could use to dispose of waste. The cleanup was intended to last from 2-4pm, although it ended at around 3:00pm, as clubs were finishing faster than originally anticipated. Janitors took care of the bags of trash accumulated by the club officers.
The cleanup event acted as a way for club presidents and officers to get together and work together on something everyone cares about, according to Inter-Club Council advisor Paul Dela Balazs. “The cleanup itself represents the purpose and mission of ICC which is to offer opportunities to give back, volunteer and support personal and shared growth.”
Kaiser High School does have its team of janitors helping to maintain our campus, although it’s not always enough. The students of Kaiser High School, however, have also done their part to assist in keeping the school pristine. In an interview, one of the janitors mentioned that “the students treat the campus pretty well. They don’t damage it.”
It’s also worth understanding the work that goes into cleaning up the campus of Kaiser High School. With such an expansive campus, there’s usually a lot of area to be covered, and it must be covered frequently as well. “We’re trying to beautify it more, and we’re getting there slowly.” The job isn’t easy, as it covers multiple stories on certain buildings & the interior of classrooms. Furthermore, there are some students out there who actively hurt the campus through forms of intentional vandalism or just general carelessness. Quoting the same janitor, “you do have some students that are knuckleheads.”
Trash itself happens to be one of those factors that hurts the campus more than other things. Balazs says that “at its most basic level, trash on our school campus continues to be a serious issue.” Areas such as C & A Building or in front of the cafeteria are examples of parts of the campus that happen to be the most vulnerable to such pollution. “How we take care of a place says a lot and really affects our experience. I think it’s a lot better than it’s been but we still have a long way to go.”
Even if the campus of Kaiser High School is a mess sometimes, everyone can at least do their part to help keep the school clean. For instance, Balazs brings up the idea of disposing of one’s own trash as well as any other pieces found lying around. Maintaining absolute cleanliness on campus at all times is certainly not going to be achieved anytime soon, but we can work our way closer to that goal and do our part, making everyone’s lives a little bit easier, and the work of the janitors a little bit less cluttered.
