The Henry J. Kaiser High School’s junior varsity girls tennis team earned the OIA championship this season after a consistently strong performance that showcased the team’s hard work. Led by Head Coach Holly Toguchi, as well as many supportive assistant coaches, they were able to guide the “Lady Cougars” to the win. The title marks a great achievement for the program and reflects the effort that was put in throughout the season.
The final championship on December 20, 2025 was at Kaiser High School after Mililani’s courts got rained out. Both doubles and singles players competed in matches, which each contributed to the team’s overall success. By staying consistent, Kaiser was able to secure more than enough wins to claim the OIA crown.
Doubles and Singles Contributions
Freshman doubles player Carys Price said competing in the championship was a memorable experience, especially in her first year on the team. “Winning the OIA title made me feel so happy as a freshman to be able to accomplish something that Kaiser hasn’t been able to accomplish in a few years,” she said.
As a doubles player, you have to rely on your partner to have your back. Carys says that, “working together, practicing outside of school, and the team practices really helped us. We had to find our rhythm together throughout the season.”
Freshman singles player Addison Wood also contributed vital wins during the tournament. Playing singles requires staying mentally focused during long rallies and stressful moments. “I think in close or long matches I think I block everyone out of my mind and just focus on the person I’m playing with and what I have to do to win the point, “ Addison says.
As a tennis player, she says “This season has helped me grow mentally in my skill level and I have gotten a lot better by hitting with people who are the same level as me as well as mentally preparing myself for wins and losses. I learned how to control my temper and not get stressed out when I lose a point. “ Further proving the benefits of getting to participate in a team.
Looking Ahead
Every match that was played during the season reflected the preparation that the team put in during practices and expedition matches. Supporting one another on and off the court played a major role in the players’ success, followed by their ability to stay focused under great stress.
In addition to the title, the season provided valuable experience for players at every skill level. Getting the chance to learn how to handle close matches, work with teammates, and remain mentally strong during challenging moments helped players develop skills that go beyond tennis. Many players say that the support from the many coaches and players also contributed to creating a positive and competitive team environment.
By winning this championship, the program has set itself up and built momentum for the future. The lessons learned this season will carry forward as players continue to improve their skills and prepare for upcoming seasons. The OIA title not only represents a successful season, but also holds a strong standard for the Kaiser girls tennis program moving forward.
